Delaware is NOT Yet a No Kill State

Then Delaware Gov. Jack Markell signing a modified version of the No Kill Advocacy Center’s Companion Animal Protection Act into law; a law that the Office of Animal Welfare, the state agency which oversees sheltering in the state, credited with having “improved the quality of care animals receive in shelters and has saved thousands of animals that would have otherwise been euthanized due to outdated policies and practices.” In 2010, Delaware’s brick and mortar shelters,…

At the Drive Thru’

Back in June, I posted about going to Burger King for the first time in 24 years when the company began offering the plant-based Impossible Burger at San Francisco locations. Yesterday, Burger King rolled out the Impossible Whopper nationwide. You can now order it at any Burger King, in any city in America. The Impossible Whopper is my favorite meal right now and I am not alone. GrubHub reports that the Impossible Burger is the…

Socially Unconscionable Sheltering

Los Angeles County’s Animal Care & Control has long been a kill-oriented, poorly managed, house of horrors. Rather than reform cruel practices and embrace the No Kill philosophy, it is trying to fend off criticism by hiding behind euphemisms. The latest? “Socially Conscious Animal Sheltering.” A rabbit furiously tries to drink water from an empty container at Los Angeles County Animal Care & Control. This follows promised reforms after what has become known as “Spinal…

Dog Mode

There will come a time when dogs are welcome wherever humans are. We already see progress toward integration, as stores, restaurants, and other public spaces are designing facilities and enacting policies with the needs of animals in mind. In restaurants, this usually means a patio. In stores, this means allowing them to shop with their humans. In bars, this means the bartender gives you a drink, a wink, and looks the other way. Despite these…

Saving Lives in Rocket City

And what it means for other communities. In 2018, Huntsville Animal Services (HAS) placed 90% of dogs and 92% of cats, earning Huntsville/Madison County the distinction of being the only place in Alabama to reach the 90% marker on the road to No Kill. A few years ago, it was placing only 24% of dogs and cats, putting nearly eight out of 10 animals to death. Getting there was not “rocket science.” That’s the premise…

The Death of Vinnie

Last week, I posted the story of a “Humane Society” in Montgomery, AL, that killed Vinnie the very day he was brought in as a stray, even though local law mandates a five day hold period. His family arrived within hours of his impound, only to find him dead, already partially frozen in the crematorium. The dad told the local newspaper that Vinnie’s death “destroyed me, my wife and our six-year-old son.” Most people responded…

NYC Pound’s “Criminal” Conduct Results in Brutal Dog Death

The New York City pound, long a bastion of incompetence, corruption, and uncaring, killed Don (pictured here) and caused another dog to suffer, because it transported them in extreme heat and failed to follow minimum, humane procedures. It was “the hottest weekend the Big Apple has seen in nearly a decade.” So hot, in fact, that the New York City triathlon was cancelled for the first time in its history. The OZY fest in central…

No Kill Know How: The Myth of Pet Overpopulation

In America today, dogs and cats are more than just our best friends, they are family. Yet the agencies we fund to care for the neediest of these animals are instead killing two million of them every year. And the reason historically given to explain this killing is the very thing that allows it to continue. Introducing the first of many videos as part of a newly launched initiative of the No Kill Advocacy Center…

Amazing Grace

I am sorry to report that Amazing Grace has died after a long battle with cancer. My deepest condolences to her family. Grace — pictured here with me back in 2014, where she was guest of honor at the Atlanta screening of Redemption, my film about the No Kill revolution in America   — survived being put in the gas chamber. She was the namesake behind the passage of Grace’s Law which finally banned gas…

California Widens Safety Net for Animals

When I was in charge of community programs at the San Francisco SPCA back in the 1990s, we provided free veterinary care for the animals of the City’s human homeless population. Over 20 years later, California will do the same statewide. The 2019-2020 California budget that went into effect this month includes millions of dollars for such a program. The state will pay veterinarians to go into organizations that provide homeless services to provide free…
